Since commencing his sole practice law firm in Los Angeles on January 1, 2007, Mr Pretty has acted as a patent expert witness in major lawsuits on pharmaceutical, electronic and other technologies involving patent, unfair competition and antitrust claims. He has also mediated cases; rendered opinions on validity and infringement issues; and remained active in patent prosecution. Before 2007, he was a partner in Hogan & Hartson LLP, a large national law firm. Previously he was a member of Pretty, Schroeder et al, P.C, an L.A. patent firm with a national practice. He has been patent trial counsel for Fortune 500 and international companies as well as for smaller businesses and individuals. He was a law clerk at the U.S. Court of Customs and Patent Appeals in 1969. His trials included cases tried to juries and others tried to the bench, as well as appeals. Throughout his law firm career, he also served his clients in patent prosecution, counseling, opinion work, and licensing and settlement matters. For over a decade he has been listed in the book Best Lawyers in America. Mr. Pretty has been active in teaching, writing and bar service. He taught patent law for approximately a decade as an adjunct lecturer at UCLA Law School; has spoken frequently as an invited speaker at national and regional patent bar association meetings; and has written and contributed to published books on patent law and to professional journals. He has been Chair of the Intellectual Property Law Section of the California State Bar and a Board Member of two leading national patent law associations.
